PRODUCTION PROCESS OF MgO

PRODUCTION PROCESS OF MgO

PRODUCTION PROCESS OF MgO

  • The process to transform the extracted raw material to finished products consists of five different main stages: Mining (Extraction of raw material), pre-beneficiation (Separation of magnesite from the waste rock), main beneficiation (Qualitative separation of magaesite grades), Calcination/sintering (MgCO3 is transformed to MgO) and final-processing (Processing of MgO).

MINING (Extraction of raw material)

  • The material is open-pit mined and transported by own trucks to the processing installations. Based on its physical and chemical characteristics, the raw material is classified in various "types". Each type is usually associated with a certain area of the pit. Main characteristics (color) of magnesite, White color, Low iron content, Very low levels of heavy metals.

PRE-BENEFICIATION (Separation of magnesite from the waste rock)

  • During pre-beneficiation, the raw material is crushed, screened at various size fractions and washed.

MAIN BENEFICIATION (Qualitative separation of magaesite grades)

  • The secondary mineral processing line is the latest development, after having spent many years in designing and testing. The material from the stockpiles, are passed through specially designed sieves to remove the un process able 0-5 mm fraction.

CALCINATION/SINTERING (MgCO3 is transformed to MgO)

  • In this process the Kiln feed magnesite is fired in the kilns to produce caustic calcined magnesia at about 1200°C. During calcination magnesite (MgCO3) is decomposed to Magnesia by release of Carbon dioxide. The calcination process which controls the formation of magnesia crystals as well as the location and behaviour of impurities is a key drive of the characteristics of the final products.

The most critical aspectof calcination, both in terms of quality and efficiency, is the control of temperature ptofile in the kiln. Control is achieved by varying several parameters such as fuel/air ratio, primary and secondary air flow and flame shape

FINAL-PROCESSING (Processing of Mgo)

  • The final processing plant includes several different crushers and mills as well as classification screens for the final benefication of the end products. And all equipment is supported by dust removal and filtering devices in order to maintain good working condition and protect the environment.
